Historical Fiction

How long does it take to write a historical novel for kids?

If I had realized how long, I might not have done it!

Well, I first found out about the disastrous flood of 1874 in 2009, and spent a couple of years tossing around ideas for a novel. I began drafting it seriously in 2012, finished a draft during summer of 2013, and have gone through three extensive revisions.  It will go out to an agent the first week of January 2014. Sending it off is, indeed, a huge step forward, but one I am not naive enough to think means the end of major revisions!

Since the turn around time from sale to bookshelf is between 12 and 18 months, I guess I would be really really happy if I could put it into the hands of smallish children in late 2015, which would be six years.
